Song of the Week: Paint it Black
Paint it Black has always been one of my faovirte Stone songs. It appeared on the 1966 album Aftermath. It got to number one on both sides of the Atlantic and ranks #174 on Rolling Stone Magazine 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
The song is called "Paint it, Black", though the comma was mistakenly added by the record label. It was composed by the Stones, with the sitar riff by Brian Jones who learn to play this instrument while on a visit to the Beatles George Harrison.
On recent years the song has been related to the Vietnam War, due to its used in Vietnam movies, most notably on Full Metal Jacket's end credits. It has also been feature on war videogames like Conflict:Vietnam, Battlefied 1942, Battlefield: Vietnam or Battlefield 2.
Many songs feature references to this song, including My Chemical Romance's "Welcome to the Black Parade" or BIg Star's "Thirteen". The song is also featured on Guitar HEro III, though it can't be played in Co-oop since the bass and guitar sounds couldn't be cut.
Another notable placed featured is on the popular internet page, Last.fm, where the two themes available are "Simply Red" and "paint it Black".

Paint it, Black
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and theyre all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens evry day
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then Ill fade away and not have to face the facts
Its not easy facin up when your whole world is black
No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the settin sun
My love will laugh with me before the mornin comes
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Hmm, hmm, hmm,...
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah!
To me, the songs is simply about a guy obssessed with the color black, but a more significant meaning is that the guy's girlfriend has died and he is now feeling depressed. THis is due to the lines:
"I see a line of cars and theyre all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back"
